SPM Mathematics 2019, Paper 2 (Question 2 & 3)

Question 2:
Radziah bought (2x – 17) dictionaries with the price of RM12x each. She paid RM4 104 for all the dictionaries.
Calculate the number of dictionaries that she bought.           [4 marks]

Solution:
Number of dictionaries = 2x – 17
Total purchase = 4104
12x(2x – 17) = 4104
x(2x – 17) = 342
2x2 – 17x – 342 = 0
(2x + 19)(x – 18) = 0
x= 19 2 ( rejected )     or     x=18 Number of dictionaries=2x17                                      =2( 18 )17                                      =19

Question 3:
Solving using matrix method is not allowed in this question.
Zul and his two friends went to a restaurant for a breakfast. Zul paid RM11 for a bowl of noodle and a glass of orange juice. Roy paid for 3 bowls of noodle and Vasu paid for 2 glasses of orange juice. The price difference between 3 bowls of noodle and 2 glasses of orange juice is RM7. The price of a bowl of noodle is higher than the price of a glass of orange juice.
Calculate the price, in RM, of a bowl of noodles and a glass of orange juice.           [6 marks]

Solution:
Payment by Zul = 11
Payment by Roy – Payment by Vasu = 7
x = Price of 1 bowl of noodle
y = Price of 1 glass of orange juice
x + y = 11 ………. (1)
3x – 2y = 7 ………. (2)
(1) × 2 : 2x + 2y = 22
(2) + (3) : 5x = 29
                  x = 5.80
From (1) : 5.80 + y = 11
                          y = 5.20
Thus, Price of 1 bowl of noodle is RM 5.80, whereas price of rice of 1 glass of orange juice is RM 5.20.
